How to use Diatoms

This is a continuation of yesterday’s story

Ant pile four was much larger outside the garage. Action was required.  This pile needed the full Diatom treatment.  The Diatom Treatment steps are easy to remember: spray, stir, spray.  For best results wait a few moment between repeating the steps so that you can see where ant activity is the most intense.  Repeat the steps until you are satisfied.  Notice I didn’t say until “ants are gone” or until “all activity has ceased”.  Those are not reasonable expectations.  What you can expect is that a swarming mass of ants is transformed into a few confused ants wandering around.

Diatoms Use Steps, repeat as necessary:

  1. Spray

White powder spraying out of plastic squeeze bottle onto ant hill
Spray top of ant pile before disturbing ants
  2. Stir
Tip of shovel with white diatoms and brown dirt
Use a shovel to turn the pile over and expose the underground tunnels and eggs

  3. Spray

Nozzle of plastic bottle pointed at ant pile that is a mix of brown dirt and white Diatoms
When you upset the pile ants will start swarming, Spray again and cover all areas where ants are active
  4. Wait a few moments for things to settle down
Zoom in of metal part of shovel handle with three small ants that blend into the rusty shovel metal.
Stare at ants wile you wait for things to calm down a bit. Can you find three ants?

  5. Repeat, starting at step one until satisfied/bored/out of Diatoms
