Introducing: Wilson

Small plastic troll with orange hair in a lying down position between two fingers of a glove.
Here is the little troll that will suffer through my ant experiments, Wilson. Wilson is resting between two fingers of an Okra Garden Supply glove.

It seems to me that E.O. Wilson needs no introduction. But, when I mentioned him to my husband, my husband said, “Who?”

E.O. Wilson is a giant of modern biology. Read his books! Look at his website. Read Wikipedia. He is famous and brilliant and got his start studying the Fire Ant. As we each continue to define our relationship with nature, particularly Fire Ants, we are continuing his legacy. Particularly when you choose to manage fire ants with Diatoms. If you are using Diatoms you are not coating your life with toxic chemicals and you are not indiscriminately destroying an undetermined number of insects. Though I have not asked for a recommendation from E.O. Wilson, I might! I think he would use Diatoms if Fire Ants moved into his garage.

As it is necessary to document the hazards of Fire Ants in order to justify the need for Diatoms. As it is also necessary to document the efficacy of Diatoms in mitigating the hazard caused by the ants, a number of experiments will be conducted. I want the experiments to be obvious and compelling. I want the images to be visually interesting, and so I decided to use these little plastic trolls as subjects. The idea is that the way the ants respond to the troll is about the same as they would respond to your little foot if you stood in an ant pile. Of course, no Humans could be harmed in this endeavor, so the troll it was.
And so I have the wonderful concept of honoring the very worthy E. O. Wilson. Also I have the idea to use these silly and colorful trolls to entice the anonymous hordes of the internet to my site. And so I named the troll Wilson.

Please forgive me Dr. Wilson.

If you are introduced natural history writing of the modern era you have likely heard of E. O. Wilson. To learn more about the current efforts of E.O. Wilson visit, https://eowilsonfoundation.org/join-us-for-biodiversity-days-march-2-3-2017/
