Crepe Myrtle is a common ornamental around Houston. It is easy to understand why when you see the showy blossoms thriving in July heat. It is a heat that kills just about everything except okra and collards so the pillars of pink are welcome by many. I find it garish and so I was thinking of removing the two in my yard and replacing them with veggie beds. Ah, that is but a dream, for now I will enjoy their low maintenance beauty.
I also came across this interesting information while learning about Crepe Myrtles, check it out!

ps- The reason the photo is of collards is because Crepe Myrtle is not very photogenic in the winter, more photos in the summer, I promise.
