Dream Garden

Four photograph photo montage of collard green plants. Three photos have labels, January, February, March, the fourth photo is a zoom in on a leaf. The photos show collard green plants getting progressively larger through the months.
Photo Caption: Montage of two collard green plants in a raised bed. The name of this bed is the straw bed because it began as a bale of straw. The bed was overgrown with Bidens alba prior to the early January 2017 freeze. Two collard plants survived while the surrounding Bidens perished. The collards have continued to grow.  With light, continuous harvest these plants thrive.

There are so many wonderful plants that I want to grow.  Gardening in Houston, Texas is full of opportunity because theoretically we can grow just about anything from warm loving tropical plants like plumeria and hibiscus to sweet temperate plants like lettuce and radishes.  There are the commodity cash crop plants that are so interesting like tobacco and cotton.  And not to mention that full range of Mediterranean diet supporting tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers.  But, it seems, based on the harsh reality of what is actually in my garden, the best thing to grow is collard greens.  And so, prepare yourself for some clichés:

What does this all mean?  It means embrace the collards.  Once I stopped dreaming of the garden I might have, the garden I did have turned into the garden of my dreams.

My garden gives me peace.  It doesn’t give me glory.
