Want to Garden? Start with Collard Greens

Here is a raised bed with Collard Greens.  If you live in the south and want to start gardening, start with Collards.  They will come through for you.  Look how well the collards below turned out despite growing in the middle of an ant pile and remaining in their 4 inch pots.  Amazing!

The corner was infested with fire ants

A look at how a fire ant mound was built around the base of Collard Green plants

But, the ants didn’t seem to effect the growth of the plants.  These plants started in four inch pots and I planned to transplant them to other beds but when the ant pile appeared I didn’t want to disturb and spread the ants around.  I added Diatomite and then just let it be.  But, you can see the neither the ants nor the four inch pots can keep Collard Greens from growing:

Notice how large the plant grew still in the little pot. Roots did escape the little pot.

Collards are the Honey Badger of the garden, ‘Collards don’t care!’
