DIATOMS – How did you hear about them?

Small portion of a 1 cm wide snake with four fire ants in the photo. The white belly of the snake is showing and the background is the slidewalk.
Photo Caption: This is a close up of fire ants. You can see two sizes of ants, one is the worker (small) the other is the boss (large).

DIATOMS, what are you?  What do you do?  There is a scrap of information that flows among the like-minded folks of the south.  That scrap of information is; use DIATOMS on ant piles.  The information is usually revealed in the following way:

New Southerner: “Oh my, we don’t have these Fire Ants where I come from.”

Old Southerner: “Yes, the bites [sic (sting)] are nasty for such a little ant.”

Very Old Southerner: “Those ants weren’t always here.  You used to be able to walk bare foot and grab a covey of quail with your bare hands.”

New Southerner: “How do you get rid of the ants?”

Old Southerner: “Just sprinkle the granules from Home Depot all over your property.”

Very Old Southerner: “The name Home Depot doesn’t make sense, they don’t have homes at the Home Depot.”

New Southerner: “Aren’t those granules toxic?”

Old Southerner: “Don’t eat the granules.”

Like Minded Old Southerner: “Another way to combat the ants is to use Diatomaceous Earth.”

New Southerner: “Di- huh? What?”

Like Minded Old Southerner: “Diatomaceous Earth, packaged under the name DIATOMS, available at OkraGardenSupply.com”

New Southerner: “What is it?  How does it Work?”

Like Minded Old Southerner: “Just keep reading the Okra Garden Supply blog, all will be revealed.”

Very Old Southerner: “What is a blog?”

This little snake was dead on my front path. A few ants were having their breakfast. I don’t think that the ants killed the snake, I think a bird dropped the dead snake. The snake is about 8 inches long.
